You can add Shopify product options without an app. A text field, checkbox or dropdown can collect customer information through your theme. The harder question is what happens when you need conditional fields, reliable extra charges, a preview or production files.
Build a small theme customization when the requirement is narrow and someone can maintain it. Consider an app when several requirements need to work together and you want a vendor to maintain the product. Neither route removes the need to test your store.
This guide is from Cloudlift, the team behind Live Product Options (LPO). We recommend our app where it fits, but a straightforward theme field can be enough.
What can you build without an app?
There are three different scopes to compare. The third involves building your own app, so it is not literally an app-free solution.
1. Collect information through the theme
Shopify supports line item properties: custom values attached to an item in the cart and order. An engraving name or a gift message is a typical example. See the Shopify line item reference.
A developer can add an input to the product form and make sure the theme sends its value when the buyer adds the item to the cart. The field's presence alone is not enough: confirm that it works with your theme's cart submission, mobile layout and any quick-buy buttons you use.
This route suits a small number of stable fields. A text field does not need to become an entire app. File uploads need additional care, particularly with cart drawers and forms submitted in the background.
Collecting a value does not change the price. If the name should cost extra, that is a separate requirement.
2. Add interactive behavior with JavaScript
Theme code can show or hide fields, count characters, validate inputs and build a visual preview. These features are possible without subscribing to an options app. The trade-off is that you own the implementation and its compatibility with the rest of the theme.
A displayed price is not necessarily the amount Shopify will charge. JavaScript cannot make an arbitrary price label authoritative at checkout. Selecting an existing higher-priced variant or adding a real accessory product can change the cart total, but each approach needs a properly designed purchase flow.
For example, if a gift box is added as another product, check how it behaves when the main item is removed or its quantity changes. Do not assume an extra line is safely linked just because both appear in the cart.
3. Build your own app for supported backend behavior
Shopify Functions let apps implement supported logic within Shopify. Their availability depends on both the app's distribution and the operation it uses.
Shopify allows stores on different plans to use public App Store apps containing Functions, subject to individual API restrictions. Custom apps containing Functions require Shopify Plus. Separately, Cart Transform's direct line-update operation is restricted to Plus and development stores. A public app does not bypass that operation-specific restriction. Sources: Functions availability and Cart Transform.
LPO's documentation illustrates the distinction: its Update price mode is for Plus and development stores, while Bundle price mode is available across Shopify plans. They work differently. See LPO checkout settings.
Not every custom app needs a separately hosted server and database. Shopify supports extension-only apps without a developer-hosted backend. Other app designs do need external infrastructure. Scope the actual solution before estimating hosting or development work.
Compare the same job before comparing cost
A single gift-message field and a complete personalizer are different projects. Comparing the cost of a full app with the cheapest options subscription does not tell you what your store should buy.
Write down one representative product and its acceptance checks before requesting a quote:
- What information must the customer enter?
- Which choices should appear only after another selection?
- What changes the charge, and how should quantity affect it?
- Is a visual preview necessary?
- What must appear in the order, and does production need a file?
- Who fixes the setup after a theme or platform change?
Ask a developer to price that scope, including testing and a maintenance arrangement. Then compare it with the app plan and extensions that cover the same requirements. There is no useful universal number of development hours for all product-options setups.
LPO's Startup plan currently starts at $9 per month with a 100-order allowance. That is $108 over twelve months if the price and required tier stay unchanged, before taxes and extensions. It is an arithmetic illustration, not a quote for a complex configurator. See the current listing and plans and extensions.
For each route, compare:
| Cost to include | Custom implementation | App subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Initial work | Requirements, coding and testing | Configuration, design assets and testing |
| Ongoing cost | Maintenance time; hosting if the design needs it | Subscription, required extensions and applicable usage costs |
| Store changes | Review your code against changes that affect it | Review your setup and work with vendor support where needed |
| Production work | Any export or fulfillment integration you build | Confirm the app covers the file or integration you need |
A developer already on your team changes the calculation. So does a larger catalog or a requirement that no existing app covers. Compare total effort as well as the subscription price.
What AI can help with
AI coding tools can draft fields, conditions and other code, and help with explanations and debugging. Shopify's Dev MCP gives compatible tools access to Shopify documentation and development guidance. Access to documentation does not guarantee a correct implementation.
The right question is whether someone can review and test the result. A field that looks correct can still fail to reach the cart, or a price display can disagree with checkout.
Research is context-specific. A METR study published in July 2025 found that experienced developers took longer on the familiar open-source tasks studied when using the available AI tools. The authors explicitly warn against interpreting this as evidence that AI is not useful for software development generally. It is not a forecast of how long your Shopify field will take.
Use AI if it helps your workflow, but keep the same acceptance checks you would apply to manually written code. An app configuration also needs review, even when an assistant helps create it.
What you still maintain after launch
A small theme field does not necessarily use the Admin API. It should not be assigned every maintenance burden of a hosted custom app.
If your implementation does call Shopify APIs, version changes matter. Shopify releases stable API versions quarterly and supports them for at least a year. Review the specific APIs you use rather than assuming every changelog entry affects your store. See API versioning.
For theme edits, keep a record of the changes and test updates before publishing them. Shopify explains that some custom code may need to be transferred to a new theme version in its theme-update guidance.
Apps using theme app extensions can reduce direct theme-code changes. They do not eliminate compatibility checks: an app embed may need enabling in a new theme, and cart behavior or styling can still need attention. LPO's setup guide explains the standard integration.
For either route, test the product page, cart and order after relevant changes. With an app, the vendor maintains the app software; you still own the store configuration and the decision to launch it.
Where LPO can save you implementation work
If you need several field types, conditions, add-ons and a live preview, LPO gives you an existing set of controls to configure. You still decide the product rules and prepare any required design assets.

Advanced requirements can involve separate extensions. Check Formula for calculated prices, Quantity for quantity discounts and Export for production artwork. Customer-facing AI image tools are separate from ordinary text options. Review the extension reference before treating the starting price as the complete cost.
If you are unsure whether you need a form, a preview or a configurator, read our guide to the four product-customization jobs.
When to build and when to buy
| Your situation | Route to consider |
|---|---|
| A few stable fields, with someone comfortable maintaining the theme | A small custom implementation may be sufficient |
| Existing code already works and meets your requirements | Keep it unless there is a concrete reason to replace it |
| Conditions, price add-ons and previews need to work together | Trial an app against a representative product |
| A requirement that available apps cannot cover | Get a scoped development proposal and check platform restrictions |
| No one wants to maintain custom code | An app can shift software maintenance to the vendor |
| A production file or supplier connection is essential | Choose the route that proves the exact output and handoff |
The more requirements an app already handles, the stronger the case for using it. That is different from saying every conditional field needs a subscription.
Test one product before committing
- Enter valid and invalid values, including a long name.
- Change selections and confirm the correct fields appear.
- Add the product to the cart and change quantity.
- Verify the amount charged through a test checkout.
- Check the saved order details and any required uploads or artwork.
- Repeat the important steps on mobile and with the cart layout your store uses.
These are suggested checks, not completed test results for this article. Do them for a coded implementation and for an app trial.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add product options without an app?
Yes. Theme fields can collect custom values using line item properties. More involved conditions and previews can also be coded, but require more development and testing.
Can I charge extra without a paid options app?
You can use appropriately priced variants or additional products where they fit the requirement. A theme price label alone cannot set an arbitrary checkout charge. More advanced approaches depend on Shopify's supported APIs and plan restrictions.
Does a custom app always need external hosting?
No. Extension-only apps can run without a developer-hosted backend. Other designs require one. Functions and distribution restrictions still apply.
Does using an app mean I can stop testing theme updates?
No. The vendor maintains the app, but you should still check your product, cart and order flow after changes that affect them.
What would we choose?
For one stable field with a capable maintainer, custom code can be sensible. For a product combining choices, conditional rules, add-ons and personalization, we would trial LPO first. Test the actual product before deciding.
