How to Set Up a Shopify Product Personalizer with AI (LPO MCP)

On this page

You probably already use AI for a good part of your store. Product descriptions, email subject lines, ad copy, replies to tricky customer messages. So here's a fair question: why are you still building your product personalization by hand?

If you sell engraved jewelry, custom prints or anything with a name on it, you know the routine. Open the app, add a text field, set the character limit, add a font picker, add a price, set up the condition so the font picker only shows when someone ticks "Add engraving", then line up the text on the preview image. Then do it again for the next product.

There's a faster way now. Live Product Options (LPO), our product options and personalizer app for Shopify, has its own MCP server. You connect it to Claude or ChatGPT, describe the personalizer you want, and the AI builds it inside your LPO editor while you watch. And if you'd rather not connect anything, the app also has a built-in AI assistant that does the same kind of work.

The quick version

  • What it is: a connection between LPO and the AI tool you already use. You describe the options, the AI creates them in your editor.
  • Who it's for: Shopify merchants selling personalized products who are tired of clicking through setup screens. No coding needed.
  • Is it safe: the AI only works inside LPO, and only while you have the editor open. It can't switch an option set live on your store. You do that.
  • How to start: turn on the MCP server in LPO settings, connect Claude or ChatGPT, open the editor, and start typing.

Picture this

You type one message:

"Set up my silver necklace for engraving. Add a checkbox for engraving at +$10. If it's ticked, show a text field with a 20 character limit and a font picker. Show the engraving on the product image."

Then you watch your editor fill up. The checkbox appears, then the text field, then the font picker. The live preview updates with sample text on the necklace. You look it over, ask for a change ("make the limit 15 characters"), and save when you're happy.

That's the whole idea. You say what you want in normal words, and the AI does the setup.

What is MCP, in one minute

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard that lets an AI assistant use tools from other apps.

Without MCP, Claude or ChatGPT can only tell you how to set up product options. With MCP connected to LPO, it can actually do it. It can read your products, add options, set prices and conditions, and arrange the live preview, all in your LPO editor.

What you need before you start

  1. Live Product Options installed on your Shopify store. You can get it from the Shopify App Store.
  2. An AI tool that supports MCP. Claude and ChatGPT are the most common. LPO's setup screen also has instructions for Claude Code and Codex, plus a general option for other MCP tools.
  3. The LPO editor open in your browser. The AI works through your open editor, so keep that tab open while you chat.

Connect LPO to Claude or ChatGPT

This part takes a couple of minutes. Open LPO and go to Settings, then the MCP Server section, and switch on Enable MCP server access.

The Enable MCP server access toggle in LPO Settings

Just below it, under Connection setup, pick your AI tool. Each tab walks you through its own steps. For Claude.ai, for example, you add LPO as a custom connector under Customize, then Connectors.

We won't repeat every step here because the screen inside the app always has the current ones. If you want to read ahead, our MCP setup guide covers it.

Let's see how easy this is

Here's what a real session looks like.

1. Open the editor and start a chat. Open LPO, then open a new chat in Claude or ChatGPT with the LPO connector turned on.

2. Say what you're selling. Something like:

"I sell personalized leather keychains. I want customers to add initials, pick a thread color, and see it on the keychain. Initials should cost $5 extra."

3. Let the AI pick a starting point. LPO comes with more than 30 ready-made templates for things like engraved rings, pet portraits, custom phone cases and wedding invitations (36 when we checked on September 24, 2026). When your product matches one, the AI starts from that template and adapts it, which usually gets you a better result than a blank page.

4. Watch it build. The options appear in your editor one by one, and the live preview updates on your product image. The MCP checks every change before it's applied. If something doesn't fit the app's rules, the AI gets an error back and fixes it, so you don't end up with a broken option set.

5. Ask for changes. "Make the initials field required." "Only show the thread color if they add initials." "Move the text a little lower." Keep going until it looks right.

6. Save and go live. Ask the AI to save, or click Save in the editor yourself. Then, when you're ready, switch the option set from Draft to Active. That last switch is always yours.

Don't want to connect anything? Use the built-in AI assistant

MCP is great if you already live in Claude or ChatGPT. But if you'd rather stay inside LPO, there's an AI assistant built right into the app.

Click the AI button in the bottom right corner of the editor. The LPO Agent panel opens, and you type what you want to build.

The LPO Agent panel in the editor, with suggestions like "Create options for one of my products" and "Build a live preview with image layers"

It can:

  • create and configure your product options from a description
  • style your options by writing custom CSS and JavaScript for you
  • set up the live preview by looking at your product image and placing the layers
  • work from attachments: products from your store, images from your asset library, a screenshot of your theme, or a CSV, JSON or text file with your option data

The + menu in the LPO Agent chat with Attach product, Asset library and Upload image or file

The AI assistant is available on all LPO plans. So you have two ways to get the same result: chat from your own AI tool through MCP, or chat inside the app.

What the AI can do through MCP

Here's what the LPO MCP gives your AI tool access to, based on the tools the connector exposed when we checked on September 24, 2026.

Product options

  • Text fields, text areas, numbers and dates
  • Dropdowns, buttons, radio buttons and checkboxes
  • Color swatches, image swatches and font pickers
  • File uploads, so customers can send their photo or logo
  • Dimensions for custom sizes, like banners or signs cut to size
  • Groups and tabs to keep long option lists tidy
  • Prices on any choice: a fixed amount, a percentage, a price per character or a price per upload
  • Conditions, so an option only shows when it's needed

Live preview

  • Text, image and upload layers placed on your product image
  • Extra views for products with a front and back
  • AI image tools: generate a background, edit an image, remove a background or recolor artwork to match the color a customer picks. These use AI credits, and each plan comes with 100 (details).

Design and setup

  • Custom CSS and JavaScript so the options match your theme
  • Which products an option set applies to: one product, or a whole group by type, tag or title
  • Translations for your option labels
  • Test runs, where the AI fills in sample answers and checks what the preview looks like

Some advanced features, like price formulas, volume discounts and print-file export, need an add-on on your LPO plan. LPO tells the AI to check your plan before it suggests them.

How safe is it?

Handing your store to an AI sounds scary, so here's exactly where the limits are.

  • It only works inside LPO. The MCP covers product options, the live preview, design and translations. It can read your product list, images and variants so it knows what to set up, but there are no tools for orders or customers.
  • It needs your open editor. The AI works through the LPO editor you have open in your browser. You see every change as it happens.
  • Changes start as a draft. Everything the AI does lands on a draft first. You can throw a draft away and go back to what you had.
  • It can't make anything live. A new option set only shows on your store after you switch it from Draft to Active. The AI can't flip that switch.
  • You decide when to connect. MCP access is off until you switch it on in Settings.

One thing to keep in mind: if you're editing an option set that's already Active, saving updates what customers see. So check the preview before you save, just like you would when editing by hand.

Why set up your personalizer this way

  • It's faster. One message can create what used to take a dozen clicks, and you can describe several options at once.
  • You don't have to know the app inside out. Say "only show the font picker if they choose engraving" and the AI works out how to set that condition up.
  • Fewer mistakes. The MCP checks each change against the app's rules before it goes into your editor, and the AI fixes anything that doesn't pass.
  • Easy to change your mind. Tweaking something is one more sentence, not a hunt through settings.
  • It builds on what already works. Starting from LPO's templates means you're adapting a setup that already works for that kind of product.
  • Use the tool you like. Claude, ChatGPT, or the assistant inside LPO. Same app, same result.

FAQs

Do I need to know how to code? No. You describe what you want in plain words. The AI can write custom CSS and JavaScript if you ask it to restyle your options, but you never have to touch it yourself.

Which AI tools work with LPO's MCP? Any up-to-date AI tool that supports MCP. Claude and ChatGPT are the most common, and the setup screen in LPO also has instructions for Claude Code and Codex.

What's the difference between the MCP and the built-in AI assistant? They do the same kind of work. The MCP lets you chat from Claude or ChatGPT. The AI assistant lives inside LPO, so there's nothing to connect. Pick whichever fits how you work.

Can the AI publish changes to my store without me? It can't switch a new option set to Active. Only you can. It works through your open editor, so you see each change as it happens. The one case to watch is editing an option set that's already Active, because saving that updates your store.

Can I undo what the AI did? Yes. Until you save, you can discard the draft and go back to the option set you had before.

Can the AI see my orders or customer data? No. The LPO MCP has no tools for orders or customers. It can read your products, their images and their variants, because it needs those to set up options.

Does it cost extra? The AI assistant is included on all LPO plans. AI image tools, like generating a background or removing one, use AI credits. Each plan includes 100 credits, and you can buy more in Settings under AI Settings. Your AI tool (Claude or ChatGPT) has its own plan too.

Will it work with my theme? The options render through LPO's app block, the same as options you build by hand (how to add the block). If the app block is already on your product page, anything the AI builds shows up there once it's Active.

Can it set up many products at once? Yes. One option set can cover a whole group of products, for example every product tagged "engravable". Just tell the AI which products it's for.

Try it on one product

Pick your most personalized product, switch on the MCP server in LPO, and describe the setup you wish you had. If you'd rather not connect anything, click the AI button inside the editor and type the same thing.

Install Live Product Options from the Shopify App Store and see how long your next personalizer takes when you just ask for it.
